One of the new (from 2006 :P) nice'to'have'things is a Twitteraccount. Basically is a very simple, yet very powerful concept. It's like a mini blog where you can post updates consisting of maximum 140 characters. All the posts should (but not limited to) answer the question "What are you doing?".
The posting can be done by website interface, Firefox extension, GTalk, email or SMS. The cool thing is that you can "follow" other users (and of course, the reverse - be followed). You'll receive a free SMS message when your friends are posting, so it's a very dynamic way to stay in touch and know what others are doing in real time.
